This month I'm sharing a bit about my processes, my business and my creative journey. Read on if you'd like to find out more . . . .
I have a BA(hons) degree in Design Practice, and have had a love of the creative arts since I can remember. My great Grandfather was also a jeweller; he had his workshop in the famous jewellery quarter - Hatton Garden, London. I still have some of his tools, and it’s a real honor to be able to use them.
I have a pretty unique upbringing ~ I was born and brought up in Southern Scotland, in a tiny village in a Tibetan Buddhist community. I consider myself very lucky to have been brought up in and around what you’d call the ‘hippy’ lifestyle - drumming circles, art therapy and tarot were pretty common place during my childhood.
On a usual day as well as work and family stuff, I try to fit the following in ~ exercise, meditation, and free writing.
Relax time is time spent in nature, and usually with family, we're really lucky to live in the wilderness, and also not so far from the stunning Lake District. Just the feeling of wind on my face, and nature all around makes me feel relaxed, so I try to get outside everyday. I also do some visualisation exercises when I really want to chill out.
I studied Design Practice at University which was very focused on photography and image making. I was really ready to get into a more tactile way of working when I completed my studies, so I started experimenting with buttons, wire feathers and other vintage bits, I loved the free and loose nature of working this way. A trip to India with my partner during my button phase really inspired my work and when we came home I incorporated my experiences and inspiration into my designs. By 2016 I started to work with the lost wax method - an ancient jewellery making technique. I found wax is a material that responds well to my intuitive and detailed way of working, it was love at first 'make' for me.
My inspiration is always shifting, currently I love the textural feel of historical fabrics, the aesthetic of archaeological artifacts and buried treasure from long ago. I mostly work in an intuitive way and often I create a piece around the stone. I love the look and feel of hand-made objects, and in our modern age of mass production there’s something special found in the impression left by the maker’s hand.
I took waaay to long to design my logo, but I wanted to come up with something that has connections to my heritage as well as the ethos of my brand. At the center of the gem logo is the syllable 'Dzam' - the seed syllable of the Tibetan Wealth God Dzambhala. Dzambhala helps us minimise or decrease all misfortunes and obstacles and helps to increase good fortune and happiness.
My business cards, flyers, leaflets and packaging are all 100% recycled. The filling and outer boxes for postal orders are 100% recycled cardboard and I use a paper based, biodegradable parcel tape to secure. My workshop is powered by 'Good Energy', one of the most ecological energy providers in the UK. I source my stones from small scale gemstone dealers who have fully traceable stones and ethical practices. I am always looking for ways to improve my business, not just by reducing waste but also by helping support other ethical businesses, individuals and charities.
